Lifting our prescribed burning effort has been a long standing topic of advocacy by the Association of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades.
The need for prescribed burning in helping protect communities from bush fires is well known to the Association, volunteers and anyone else with bush fire experience.
Alas, the wisdom behind prescribed burning remains elusive to some. Those people usually lack bush fire knowledge and experience but have the capacity to unduly influence political decisions on the subject.
In February this year, two bushfires that started on the same day were brought under control because of an earlier prescribed burn conducted by the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPAW).
Below is a link to a short video produced by DPAW explaining the benefits derived from prescribed burning as demonstrated in these two fire fights.
The Association encourages readers to send the link to any friends, work colleagues or even family who may be ‘doubting Thomases’ on this subject. There are undoubtedly other sources of similar evidence on the need for prescribed burning that can also be used as part of our own community education effort.
Volunteer Bush Fire Fighters know as well as anyone the need for prescribed burning and so can help educate the wider community which in turn will diminish the unwarranted political influence of those whose flawed views are also dangerously reckless.
