The 2017 WAFES Conference is on this weekend and in an attempt to get a feel for how our members feel about conferences, and the WAFES conference in particular, we asked for some feedback via our Quick Quiz.
The first question asking if respondents believe conferences especially for emergency service volunteers are useful and/or valuable, the vast majority (~ 80%) said yes.
The next was a similar question but asked if mixed (volunteer/career) conferences were considered valuable – with a strong, albeit lesser (~72%) majority still agreeing
We asked respondents if they had ever been to a WAFES conference and of those that said yes, what they liked about it. Almost everyone (87%) said “I enjoyed meeting other volunteers from my service” with the next most common response being “I liked all the interesting displays” (80%). The least common response was “I enjoyed talking with career staff” (27%) which was a long way behind the next least of “It made me feel valued as a volunteer” (53%).
The other side of the coin – what did you think could be done better returned some interesting results with no one wanting “more opportunity to meet with volunteers from other services”, equal numbers of respondents saying they wanted “more opportunity to meet other volunteers from my service”, “felt undervalued as a volunteer” and thought there “wasn’t enough interesting displays”. (~13% each)
At the higher end, a small majority (53%) said “I wanted to learn more technical things” and more than 45% of respondents giving an “other” reason which included “More opportunities to play with [equipment]”, “Less presentations from DFES staff and more from other industry experienced people” and a repeated theme of the need to allow more time for presentations to ensure greater technical detail.
While this Quick Quiz was certainly helpful feedback in light of the high probability of there not being a dedicated volunteer conference next year, we will also ask delegates to complete a survey specific to this weekend’s conference, the results of which we will also make available.
So thank you to those who contributed to this survey and if you haven’t yet – or haven’t completed all of our 3 minute Quick Quizzes – please click here and send this link to all your volunteer mates and colleagues ASAP. (http://avbfb.org.au/category/news-and-media/quick-quiz/)
